Quick Cap — Epsode 9 “True North” recap, review, etc.

Episode 9 True North

Hansel, Gretel, and the Evil Queen in one of the best costumes yet!

I’m trying something different this week. I’m writing a “quick cap” right after watching the episode. I’ll also post a “slow cap” by the end of the week, after I’ve had a chance to rewatch the episode, think about it a bit, and get more screenshots. (Editing to add 1/17: On second thought, one recap is more than enough, but I may have some thoughts on various aspects of the episode that I will post later.)

Hansel and Gretel are homeless in both worlds, Emma lies to Henry about his father, and a mysterious stranger comes to town in this episode — which was probably the weakest episode yet. Continue reading

Rumpelstiltskin behind the scenes, Episode 8 “Desperate Souls”

Robert Carlyle and Michael Waxman Episode 8 Once Upon a TimeI just came across this photo of Robert Carlyle sharing a laugh with Michael Waxman, the episode’s director. This picture is wonderful — Rumpelstiltskin, as the newly-hatched Dark One, looks so otherworldy, and yet there he is, plopped into our world of baseball caps, sunglass, and parkas. Carlyle’s smile is ghastly. He looks as if he is trying to grin, but has too much makeup to freely move the parts of his face. Plus the broken teeth are frightening. I’d love to find out how the make-up people get his teeth to look like that. Continue reading

What do you want to see happen in “Once Upon a Time”?

In honor of Once Upon a Time coming back from hiatus tonight (Sunday, January 8, 2012, at 8:00 PM Eastern time), here’s a poll looking ahead to the rest of the season:

Want to know more about what is going to happen? Read an interview that Entertainment Weekly did with show creators/executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who give teasers about what they are doing for the rest of this season (contains spoilers): ‘Once Upon a Time’ creators talk second half of the season (more deaths coming?)

Jennifer Morrison (Emma) on “Good Morning America”

Jennifer Morrison on "Good Morning America" January 6, 2012

This morning on GMA, Morrison gave a brief description of the upcoming Episode 8 (Desperate Souls), and they showed a short clip (both the description and the clip were slightly spoilery). It was my first glimpse of the episode, as I’ve been avoiding watching the sneak peeks, and I have to say, it looks REALLY good. I think this could turn out to be one of the best episodes yet.

At the end of the interview, the host said that as the father of a young daughter, he “liked the fact that on the show, the women are strong. There’s some very strong female characters.” Continue reading

Jane Espenson, Once Upon a Time writer

Jane Espenson

Jane Espenson, who wrote the Jiminy-Cricket-centric Episode 5 That Still Small Voice and Episode 8 Desperate Souls, which airs this Sunday, January 12, spoke to blogcritics.org a few weeks ago.

What she said is very slightly spoilery, so I’ll continue after the jump. Continue reading
