The Miller’s daughter

Spinning wheel

Rumpelstiltskin, print by Kevin Tong

In The Stable Boy, we found out that Cora (Regina’s mother) is the miller’s daughter. In the traditional Rumpelstiltskin story, the miller, a poor man, tries to impress the king by telling him that his daughter could spin straw into gold — when she could do no such thing. The king orders the girl be brought to the castle, where he locks her in a room filled with straw and says that if she doesn’t turn the straw into gold by the morning, she would have to die. No “Once Upon a Time” episode on Feb. 5, 2012 — but looking forward to the next one

There is no episode this week (Sunday, Feb. 5). [Editing to add: It was because of the Super Bowl. None of the networks wanted to put on anything new at the same time, because they were afraid most people would be watching the game and wouldn’t watch their programs.]

The next episode will be Skin Deep on February 12. I’m excited about this episode. It’s written by Jane Espenson, it tells more of … (slight spoiler if you didn’t see the promo at the end of the last episode) Continue reading

Rumpelstiltskin behind the scenes, Episode 8 “Desperate Souls”

Robert Carlyle and Michael Waxman Episode 8 Once Upon a TimeI just came across this photo of Robert Carlyle sharing a laugh with Michael Waxman, the episode’s director. This picture is wonderful — Rumpelstiltskin, as the newly-hatched Dark One, looks so otherworldy, and yet there he is, plopped into our world of baseball caps, sunglass, and parkas. Carlyle’s smile is ghastly. He looks as if he is trying to grin, but has too much makeup to freely move the parts of his face. Plus the broken teeth are frightening. I’d love to find out how the make-up people get his teeth to look like that. Continue reading

Episode 1.8 “Desperate Souls” recap, review, etc.

Rumpelstiltskin summoning the Dark One

Once Upon a Time roared back from hiatus with an episode revealing Rumpelstiltskin’s backstory. The episode was full of surprises (I jumped twice). It had twists within twists and striking parallels between the two storylines, all of it fitting together like an elegant, well-oiled, satisfying puzzle. Continue reading

Fifth Kevin Tong Print — Rumpelstiltskin

Once Upon a Time series

Rumpelstiltskin

This is the fifth and second-to-last print in the Once Upon a Time series. It went on sale at 11:56 a.m. this morning. The gold print is sold out, but there are still copies left of the silver print.

It shows the silhouetted faces of a woman, who I assume is the miller’s daughter in the Grimm Brothers version of the tale, and a sharp-chinned, wart-nosed Rumpelstiltskin, inside a spinning wheel. In the background is a pile of straw (which looks especially nice in the gold print), which resembles the back of a woman’s head. Continue reading

Picture of Rumpelstiltskin in Episode 8 “Desperate Souls”

I was trying to stay completely unspoiled, but this picture popped up on my Facebook page. It’s not too spoilery, though …. Continue reading
