3×02 “Lost Girl” mini recap, and hopes for the new season

At first, it looks like the “Lost Girl” of the title is going to be Belle. But it turns out to be Emma. In this character-driven episode, which could be subtitled “The Truth Will Set You Free,” or “The Key to Your Present Lies in Your Past,” Emma, Snow, and Rumpelstiltskin must learn to accept who they really are. Episode 18 “The Stable Boy” — Recap, review, etc.

Long-simmering questions get answers, and connections between characters, deep in the past, are uncovered in this excellent episode. We learn how Regina became evil and why she hates Snow White. We find out that Regina’s mother is the miller’s daughter, that August W. Booth does not lie, and that Katherine is still alive. There is much here to ponder during the break. Continue reading

The Miller’s daughter

In The Stable Boy, we found out that Cora (Regina’s mother) is the miller’s daughter. In the traditional Rumpelstiltskin story, the miller, a poor man, tries to impress the king by telling him that his daughter could spin straw into gold — when she could do no such thing. The king orders the girl be brought to the castle, where he locks her in a room filled with straw and says that if she doesn’t turn the straw into gold by the morning, she would have to die. What did Snow White do to the Evil Queen?

(Update 9/20/12): This post was written before the show revealed what Snow White did that made the Evil Queen hate her so much. To find out what she did, see the recap for episode 18, The Stable Boy.

Original post below:

The Evil Queen and Snow White in front of the coffin of Snow White's father (behind the scenes, Episode 7 "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter")

ABC said in a press release that in an upcoming show (not tonight’s, but the one after that — Episode 18 Stable Boy, airing April 1) “the event that caused the Evil Queen to loathe Snow White [will be] revealed.”

Can you predict what the event will be?

We saw in an earlier episode that the Evil Queen said that Snow White betrayed her by revealing a secret. What do you think the Evil Queen’s secret was?

So that’s two (very closely related) questions: What was the event, and what was the secret?

Anyone who guesses either or both correctly will get a shout-out in a future post.

Quick Cap — Epsode 9 “True North” recap, review, etc.

Episode 9 True North

Hansel, Gretel, and the Evil Queen in one of the best costumes yet!

I’m trying something different this week. I’m writing a “quick cap” right after watching the episode. I’ll also post a “slow cap” by the end of the week, after I’ve had a chance to rewatch the episode, think about it a bit, and get more screenshots. (Editing to add 1/17: On second thought, one recap is more than enough, but I may have some thoughts on various aspects of the episode that I will post later.)

Hansel and Gretel are homeless in both worlds, Emma lies to Henry about his father, and a mysterious stranger comes to town in this episode — which was probably the weakest episode yet. Continue reading

Episode 1.7 “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” recap, review, etc.

(Last edit 12/17/11 — added more screencaps)

Episode 7 The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

The Evil Queen squeezing the Huntsman's heart

In this powerful episode, a character dies just as we were getting to know him. And if we ever had any doubts about whether Regina knew everything, those doubts were laid to rest.

Recap

Kisses have a lot of power. A kiss brought Snow White back to life in the Pilot. A kiss, in this episode, tears a rupture in the wall between the fairytale and modern worlds and brings Graham’s fairytale memories back. Continue reading
