I just came across this photo of Robert Carlyle sharing a laugh with Michael Waxman, the episode’s director. This picture is wonderful — Rumpelstiltskin, as the newly-hatched Dark One, looks so otherworldy, and yet there he is, plopped into our world of baseball caps, sunglass, and parkas. Carlyle’s smile is ghastly. He looks as if he is trying to grin, but has too much makeup to freely move the parts of his face. Plus the broken teeth are frightening. I’d love to find out how the make-up people get his teeth to look like that.
